Did you know you can also crochet corner to corner horizontally, instead of diagonally? It’s called the Tulip stitch in DC (no it’s not a flower in this case) and is very fun to crochet.

In order to learn corner to corner in hdc easily, you need to make sure you understand graphs. Almost all C2C patterns are written in graphs. Actually, they are much easier to understand than you might think.

Corner to corner is made from one corner to another corner and is crocheted in diagonal rows one pixel at a time. For this tutorial, one pixel includes a chain of 2 plus 3 half double crochets.

Crocheting the first C2C Half Double Crochet Pixel

So let’s get started. First, make a chain of 5 (2 of which are for the turning chain/chain space) and then crochet 1 HDC in each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th chain from the hook which resembles your first tile. Now chain 5 again to start the 2nd tile. Every time you need to increase in a diagonal row, you will need to add a chain of 5 in the beginning of a row. Now, crochet 1 HDC in eachof the 3rd, 4th, and 5th chain from the hook.

Then flip your first tile over such that we can attach the 2nd tile with the 1st tile. Using a slip stitch where the chain 3 space of the 1st tile is. Now chain 2 to start the 3rd tile. You will always chain 2 when creating a new tile within a row.

Keep Increasing by adding Pixels each Mini C2C Half Double Crochet Row

Next, crochet 3 half double crochet stitches in the same chain-3 space where you slip stitched into. You now finished your 2nd diagonal row. Let’s start the 3rd diagonal row by chaining 5. You are still increasing in this example.

Now you will crochet 1 HDC in eachof the 3rd, 4th, and 5th chain from the hook and then flip your work of the first 3 tiles over such that you slip stitch into the chain-2 space of the 3rd tile. Chain 2 to start the next tile.

Again crochet 3 HDC stitches into the same chain-3 space you just slip stitched into. You need to crochet 1 more tile for this row. So, slip stitch into the next tile over and then chain 2 and crochet 3 more HDC’s into the same space.

Decreasing the Square for the Mini C2C with Half Double Crochet Stitches

You will now start your decreasing rows for this 9×9 tile example. So flip your work, and slip stitch into the just made HDC’s and the chain-2 space. You will do this every time at the beginning of a decreasing row.

Next, you will create 2 normal tiles like you did before. [Chain 2 and 3 HDC’s in to the same chain-2 space you just slip stitched into]. Then slip stitch into the neighboring tile and repeat [].

Because you are decreasing in this row, you will only have 2 tiles to make. Now, flip your work over and slip stitch into the just made hdc’s and the chain-2 space. Let’s crochet the last tile for this example which means you need to chain 2 to start it.

Crochet3 HDC’s in the same chain-2 space you just slip stitched into. You now have a9×9 tile all made with HDCs using the Corner to Corner technique.
